The area beyond the maintenance road behind the first green on the old course is out of bounds and is defined by the course side edge of the road. This does not include the main driveway.

Penalty Areas – Rule 17
Penalty areas are defined by either red stakes or yellow stakes.
When a player’s ball is in a penalty area, including when it is known or virtually certain to be in a penalty area even though not found, the player may take relief using one of the options under Rule 17.1d.
Penalty areas surrounding the 15th and 17th greens on the Old Course
Where wooden sleepers bound the Old course 15th & 17th greens, the penalty area edge of the sleepers defines the margin of the penalty area. The sleepers themselves are not in the penalty area. If a ball has crossed the line of sleepers it is in the penalty area with relief using one of the options under Rule 17 or by playing a ball from the dropping zone which is marked by a blue stake.
If a ball comes to rest on the sleepers or on the green side of the sleepers it is not in the penalty area and remains ‘In the general area’. It therefore must be played as it lies unless the position of the ball is such that the sleepers become immovable obstructions in which case abnormal ground conditions Rule 16.1b will apply.
