Local Rules

1.   1. OUT OF BOUNDS (Rule 18)

A ball is out of bounds

a. When it is beyond any wall or fence defining the boundary of the course.

b. When it is beyond the white posts behind the green and surrounding the greenkeepers sheds on the 9th and 18th holes. These posts are treated as boundary objects and are immoveable obstructions

The out of bounds line on the perimeter fence is between the inside of adjacent fence posts. If any of the ball touches this line it is in bounds. The out of bounds line runs through the “kissing gates” on the 1st and 2nd holes in line with the fence posts on either side of the gate. That part of the gate that is in bounds is an immoveable obstruction and relief may be taken under Rule 16-1.

2. ABNORMAL COURSE CONDITIONS (Rule 16-1)

The following are considered “Abnormal Course Conditions” from which relief may be taken under Rule 16-1.

All course works, paths, drainage works and tyre tracks, as well as ground which is clearly under repair, whether marked or not. On a putting green, a ball that comes to rest on an aeration hole may be placed at the nearest spot, not nearer the hole, that avoids the situation, without penalty.

The area defined by blue stakes between the 6th Green and 7th Tee, being the drainage culvert and its surrounds, is a No Play Zone that is treated as an Abnormal Ground Condition. If a player’s ball is in the No Play Zone, or the No Play Zone interferes with the stance or swing, the ball must not be played as it lies and free relief must be taken. The player has these relief options:

The player may take relief under Rule 16.1f. The nearest point of complete relief should be identified and a ball must be dropped in, and come to rest in, the relief area. The relief area is one club length from the reference point, is not nearer the hole than the reference point, and is in the General Area. When taking relief, the player must take complete relief from all interference by the No Play Zone. As an extra option the player may take free relief by dropping a ball in the dropping zone which is located to the lower side of the of the drainage culvert. The dropping zone is a relief area under Rule 14.3

3. STAKED TREES (Rule 16-1)

Daffodils, staked trees and small trees or bushes under 6ft in height, whether staked or not, are No Play Zones. The player must take relief from interference by the no play zone under Rule 16-1f.

4. IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTION CLOSE TO A PUTTING GREEN (Rule 16-1)

Fixed sprinkler heads and drain covers are immovable obstructions from which relief for interference may be taken under Rule 16-1.

The player has an extra option to take relief when such immovable obstructions are on or close to the putting green and on the line of play. If a ball lies in the General Area the player may take relief under Rule 16.1b if an immoveable obstruction is on the line of play, and is:

  • On or within two club lengths of the putting green, and
  • Within two club lengths of the ball

But complete relief must be taken, which includes both physical and line of play interference.

Exception – There is no relief under this Local Rule if the player chooses a line of play that is clearly unreasonable.

5. PENALTY AREAS (Rule 17)

Penalty Areas are defined by red stakes.

If a player’s ball is in a penalty area, including when it is known or virtually certain to be in a penalty area even though not found, the player may take relief using one of the options under Rule 17.1d, each for one penalty stroke. The player may:

  • Take stroke and distance relief by playing a ball from a relief area based on where the previous stroke was made.
  • Take back–on–the–line relief by dropping a ball outside the penalty area, keeping the point that the ball entered the penalty area between the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped.
  • Take lateral relief outside the penalty area. The reference point being the point that the ball entered the penalty area and a ball must be dropped in and played from the two-club length relief area, which is no nearer the hole than the reference point.

As an extra option, also for one penalty stroke, the player may drop the original ball or another ball in the dropping zone. The dropping zone is a relief area under Rule 14-3.

Dropping zones are to the left of the middle tee and to the right of the forward tee when playing the 8th/17th hole, to the front right of the green when playing the 4th/13th hole and to the front left of the green when playing the 7th/16th hole.

6. TEMPORARY GREENS

Temporary Greens may, from time to time, be established on any hole as areas of fairway surrounded by a white line.

Any such temporary green, when not in use, is a wrong green. Any putting green replaced by a temporary green is also a wrong green. Free relief from interference by a wrong green must be taken under Rule 13.1f

If any part of a player’s ball touches a wrong green or if a wrong green physically interferes with the players stance or area of intended swing relief must be taken. The player must drop a ball by establishing the nearest point of complete relief. The ball must then be dropped within one club’s length of this reference point that is not nearer the hole being played. There must be complete relief from all interference by the wrong green.

7. RECOGNISED PRACTICE AREAS

On competition days the whole of the course except the 1st and 18th fairways, all bunkers and all greens are deemed practice ground.

Penalty for breach of a Local Rule: General Penalty under Rule 14-7a.
